NHDP at ECSAS 2025

Members of NHDP presented their research at the European Conference on South Asian Studies, held on 2 October 2025. In the panel “State Law, Religious Identity, and Cultural Transformation: Hinduisation and Sanskritisation in the Himalayas,” scholars examined key aspects of Nepal’s legal and cultural history. The discussion focused on how processes of Hinduisation and Sanskritisation have shaped the relationship between state-imposed laws and local traditions. Particular attention was given to their influence on religious practices, social norms, and community identities, as well as the ways in which diverse cultural groups have been integrated under a shared legal framework while maintaining Nepal’s Hindu identity. The panel was presented by NHDP team member Rajan Khatiwoda, together with Manik Bajracharya and Nirajan Kafle.
